English Language

Course Title:

A Level English Language

Entry Requirements:

Students will need to have obtained at least 5 Grade 5s or above, including English and Maths, plus subject specific criteria for each intended subject at A Level.

English - at least a grade 6 at GCSE.

Students must study the following two core themes:

  • Language Diversity
  • Language Change
  • Child Language Development
  • Textual Variations and Representations
  • Language in Action
  • Original Writing

During this course, students will build on their knowledge of analysing language. To do this, they will begin by learning about the prominent language theorists that underpin this field of research. After this, students will then apply these theories to spoken and written discourse and develop critical responses to theories and how applicable and accurate they are. Students will also engage with writer's perspectives and how they are conveyed, as well as exploring ideas around Child Language Acquisition and Language Change.

This varied course will entail two formal exams, both of which are 40% of the final A level. Later in the course, students will also engage with their own autonomous 'language investigation', whereby they conduct their own research and apply the theories they have learned about; this will be the remaining 20%.
