Course Title:

A-Level Sociology

Entry Requirements:

Students will need to have obtained at least 5 Grade 5s or above, including English and Maths. Plus, subject specific criteria for each intended subject at A Level:

Sociology - at least a Grade 6 in English at GCSE.

Students must study the following two core themes:

  • socialisation, culture and identity
  • social differentiation, power and stratification.

The themes should be understood and applied to particular substantive areas of Sociology. These

themes are to be interpreted broadly as threads running through many areas of social life and should not therefore be regarded as discrete topics.

In addition, students must understand the significance of conflict and consensus, social structure and social action, and the role of values.  Students will study topics including, the family, education, the media and crime and deviance.

Three, two hour exam papers will be sat at the end of the two year course.  Papers are equally weighted.

What students say:

I chose Sociology A-Level because I want to study Criminology at University and I was attracted to the crime and deviance topic.  I have learnt many new things about how different theorists believe society works.  I have also learnt how to think critically, analyse and evaluate.
