Sheffield Park Academy - Newsletter November 2016
Year 12 BTEC Sport
Year 12 BTEC sport students visited two major sporting venues
earlier this term - Old Trafford, home of Manchester United and
the National Cycling Centre and Velodrome.
Currently covering a number of topics within the BTEC Sport
award, the students found the visits very interesting, particularly
with regards to the history of sport. At Old Trafford, they were
treated to a stadium tour and were allowed to enter the field of
play from the dressing rooms as the players would on match day.
The Commonwealth Park and National Cycling Centre also gave
the students the opportunity to try their hand at BMX biking on
one of only two indoor purpose built tracks in Europe.
During the visit, the students saw first hand
the positive legacy big corporate sporting
events can bring to areas of high deprivation.
StayingwithBTECSport, four students recently
applied for and were successfully appointed
into paid roles, assisting the academy’s PE
department during Key Stage 3 lunchtimes.
The boys, who receive an hourly wage for their work, have
been undergoing training for the role and running football
competitions, which have proven extremely popular.
The students are also undertaking a CSL (Community Sports
Leadership) Award - a level 2 coaching qualification, whichwill
enable the students to take their own sessions in a number
of different activities and sports. This qualification is part of
the UKCC Coaching scheme and will allow students a smooth
transition to specialist coaching awards, such as the FA’s level
2 coaching award and the RFU (Rugby Football Union) level 2
coaching award.
Their enthusiasm and professionalism has been excellent and
we wish them well for the rest of the year in their new roles.
