Abigail Secures Place on Youth Cabinet

The votes are in for the local Youth Cabinet Elections, with Sheffield Park Academy’s Abigail Kirk securing her place for another year.

A Year 11 student at the academy, Abigail is already a veteran of the political scene, having been chosen to represent Sheffield on the UK Youth Parliament in 2015.

Last month, Abigail was re-elected onto the Sheffield Youth Cabinet, which represents the voice of all young people aged 11-18 who live in the area. As a part of its role, the cabinet works on campaigns to make people look at and listen to the issues that constituents want to be seen and heard, helping to make Sheffield and the UK a better and fairer place for young people.

Supported by Sheffield Futures’ Young Peoples’ Involvement Team, this year’s elections, which took place in secondary schools and youth clubs across the city, recorded an incredible 11,581 votes – the highest so far in an election for young people in the Sheffield area.

Sheffield Park Academy was also presented with a bronze democracy award, thanks to more than half of its students choosing to vote.

Commented Sheffield Park Academy Executive Principal Mr Dillon: "Abigail’s passion and determination to help improve the lives of others, both at a local and national level, really shines through and we are, once again, very proud that she has been chosen as a member of the Sheffield Youth Cabinet. It’s also very encouraging that so many of our students took an interest in the elections and actually voted, helping us to secure the bronze democracy award. Next time around we’ll aim for Gold!”
