World Cup Referee Visits Sheffield Park Academy

World Cup referee Howard Webb ensured fair play when he helped Sheffield Park Academy stage its own version of the global soccer tournament. Run over the course of six weeks, students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 have been taking part in the five-a-side contest, which has been divided into three parts and 19 teams, with each representing a different country.

The event culminated in three 25 minute finals played on Monday (18th July) on the academy’s astroturf pitch and officiated by Howard Webb, who took part in the real thing when he refereed the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa.

Explained event organiser and the Academy’s Acting Curriculum Area Leader for PE Chris Motley: “Our aim was to have all the students from the respective year groups taking part, either as players or spectators. And the real icing on the cake was when Mr Webb kindly agreed to act as referee for yesterday’s finals, which have been a fantastic experience for our students.” Each winning team received a trophy and medals, with either a medal or certificate for the runners-up.

During the course of his visit, the Premier League referee also officially opened Sheffield Park’s new astroturf pitch, as well as meeting the academy’s new student ambassadors, viewing poems and artwork specially created for his visit and being interviewed about his amazing career by two media students in front of a school assembly.
