Years 7-9: Performing, Composing and Listening

Students will be involved in performing (on voice, keyboard, drums and guitars), composing (songs, instrumental pieces, beatbox freestyles and lots more) and listening to lots and lots of exciting music. There will be opportunities for students to develop their studies and show off what they've learnt in concerts and showcases throughout the year. In year nine students may have the opportunity to study a BTEC unit, planning and creating a musical show of some kind.

Years 10 and 11: BTEC

At key stage 4 students can take BTEC music which is a wide vocational course, developing their practical skills such as performing and composing, and teaching them how to plan a musical event and work as a team. Our key stage 4 students work hard to improve their performing by appearing at many school shows. 'Sparx' (formerly known as the 'no names') are our most advanced band and are very popular amongst the students.

Sixth Form: A Level Music and BTEC Music Technology

We will be offering two sixth form courses very soon - A level music and BTEC music technology. A level music is perfect for those who want to develop their love of music to include all genres and styles, composing, performing and listening to great music. BTEC music technology students will study how to use technology to compose and to enhance their performances. They will learn their way around a recording studio and become confident with MIDI sequencing packages on our department PCs.
Instrumental Lessons

We offer free, high quality lessons in drums, percussion, acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, voice, keyboard, violin and brass.
ICT

All students are encouraged to have an online portfolio of their own music so they can show their friends and families what they've achieved in their music lessons. Students have the opportunity of creating a dance piece using DanceEjay and uploading it onto their online portfolio and onto their phones as a ring tone.

Trips and Events

We hold regular showcases of our students' talents, X Factor style competitions and end of term productions with the dance and drama departments. Students and staff go out to concerts and musical workshops, experiencing a wide variety of professional music- making.

Community Work

The department is heavily involved in work with local primary schools, going in and working with the younger children, or inviting them into our school to perform to them. Several primary schools will join us for our Christmas Carol Concert in Sheffield Cathedral this year. Our samba band is planning to undertake an exciting programme of appearances around Sheffield.
