The Curriculum
The curriculum at Sheffield Park Academy aims to support the highest level of achievement of all students. The academy:
- Teaches a broad and balanced range of subjects including all the key areas of the National Curriculum.
- Pays particular attention to developing the essential skills in English, Mathematics, and Information Technology.
- Teaches the skills of Business and Enterprise to all, so that students are prepared for the world of work, build their confidence and self-esteem and enable them to follow them through to a higher level.
- Provides a range of academic and vocational courses from the age of 14 onwards. There will be close co-operation with Sheffield Springs Academy to ensure the right range of levels are offered.
- Provides a Key Stage 4 curriculum which offers both academic and vocational opportunities for learning. Students will be able to follow courses that will enable them to go on learning and achieving after 16.
- Maximises the use of Information Technology (ICT) so that students can learn and study outside of the classroom, 24 hours a day.
- Provides each student with a suitable programme of learning and challenge designed to meet individual needs including special educational needs and gifted and talented.
Specialism
The academy specialism is Business and Enterprise. This provides students with opportunities to develop their:
- Confidence and self-esteem
- Creativity and thinking skills
- Communication skills
- Skills for job opportunities in the business community, or to continue studying beyond 16 and through to University
Extra-curricular Activities
Activities and interests outside lessons are enjoyable, but are also very important for the development of students. We encourage participation in as many activities as possible. A full programme of activities is offered to students.
Homework
Learning does not just take place in the classroom. Many tasks can only be carried out outside the classroom and students are encouraged to see learning as not just limited to school. This allows them to develop private study skills which are so important. It also allows parents and carers to see, take part in and support their children's progress.
Every student is given homework tasks, and at the beginning of each year parents/carers are given their child's homework programme.
As they progress in the academy, students are given longer tasks to complete over a period of time. They are assisted in devising a plan to carry out this work and set deadlines for completion of each stage.
Every student has a planner in which details of work set, deadlines of work and comments on performance and progress are written for parents/carers to sign each week. In this way, their child's progress can be continually monitored.
